Layering Lighting
When we are designing lighting for a project we think about it in three main layers; overall light, ambient light, and task lighting.
Layer 1: Overall Lighting
Types: Typically ceiling such as recessed cans or surface mount fixtures. [We like to use these full spectrum bulbs]
When to use: When you want a lot of light, when you need a space bright and evenly light.
Layer 2: Ambient Lighting
Types: Wall mount fixtures, table and floor lamps, art lighting, under cabinet lighting/cabinetry lighting and electric tea lights/candles
When to use: When you want moderate lighting, not too bright but can still bring decent light into a space.
Ambient lighting is meant to feel soft and more moody than overall or task light, keep this in mind when you are selecting where and type of light.
Layer 3: Task & Focal Point Lighting
Types: We like to use swing arm sconces, table or floor lamps, and art lights for these.
When to use: When you desire a specific amount or type of light for a task such as working at your desk or reading, or you are highlighting a specific feature or artwork.
*Notes for choosing new LED bulbs
The suggested bulb temperature of light is 2700-3000K [for LED bulbs] for residential interiors. 2700k most matches an old typical incandescent bulb
[Kelvin in lighting defines the color temperature of a light bulb, indicating whether it produces a warm (yellowish) or cool (bluish) light]
2200πΎβ3000πΎ (Warm White): Cozy, soft, and inviting, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
3100πΎβ4500πΎ (Cool White/Bright White): Crisp, clean, and energizing- blue-toned white, good for task lighting, and garages
4600πΎβ6500πΎ (Daylight): Very bright, blue-toned white, not recommended for residential use.
